I checked into the Paramount Hotel on West Forty-sixth Street near Times Square. The production company had a block of twenty-something rooms. I kept trying to figure out how much of a budget they had to shoot the filmâI imagined it was somewhere in the millions. Every time I thought about it I got giddy behind the fact that I was the star in a production so big.
I took the elevator up to the fourteenth floor and went to my room. Walking inside, I felt like I could get use to shit like this. I mean, it wasnât anything extraordinary or nothing. But just the fact that I would be able to order room service all day, have my dry cleaning picked up and dropped back off, and enjoy housekeeping each and every morning was what I was talking about. And I would be able to enjoy it all by myself. I didnât have a roommate like some of the crew and cast. Overall, it was peaceful, a retreat away from the hectic and busy outside world.
I unpacked my clothes and put everything in a place as if I were at home. I ordered a turkey club and an iced tea and then got in the shower. I didnât feel like putting on clothes right away so I just lounged around in the complimentary robe. I decided I would eat and take a nap before I went down to visit the set.
I got to the set at close to five oâclock and it was perfect timing because everybody was sitting around eating pizza.
âHey,â Jay greeted me as I approached.
âHi, Jay,â I said. âHow yâall doinâ?â I spoke to the others.
âHi,â they said.
âSo, itâs good to see you had a safe flight,â Jay said. âYou want something to eat?â
âYeah,â I said, looking at the pizza with hunger in my eyes. I was so damn greedy it didnât make sense. And the number one question people asked me in interviews was how I stayed so thin. I couldnât tell âem. It was a mystery to me.
âDid you check into the hotel okay?â Jay asked, handing me a paper plate with a slice of cheesy, greasy pizza on it.
âYup,â I told him. âEverything was cool.â
âThatâs good. Well, you wanna take a look around the set?â he asked.
âI would love to,â I said.
Jay led me to my trailer first, which really blew my mind. I had my own trailer. That was beyond me. I walked inside and it was set up like a small apartment. There was a couch and TV, a kitchenette and a powder room. It was cute.
âYou like it?â Jay asked. âThis is where youâll spend most of your time between takes,â he explained.
âYeah, itâs so cute,â I said, looking around.
âSo, you ready?â he asked. âWe start shooting tomorrow. You got your shooting schedule?â
I nodded my head. âI think Iâm ready. I hope so.â
âYou been practicing?â
âYeah. Every chance I get.â
âThen youâll be all right,â he said. âAnd Iâll work with you, ya know what I mean.
